Rock Thomas is the father of #IAMMovement. In this episode, Rock will talk about his mindset tools, techniques, hacks, rituals and routines that have enabled him to succeed in his life.
1. Love to Learn
People have lost their curiosity. Children nowadays are discouraged from asking big questions. Rock once met a 50-year-old founder of a company whose sales were $50 million and the guy could not stop asking questions. Rock tries to spend a third of his time with people that are ahead of him, a third with people trying to do what he does and a third mentoring people so that he stays fresh and reminds himself of some of the things that he has learned.
2. Find and Feed Your Inner Narrative
Rock says that people need to realize that they have an inner narrative that drives them, a story that they tell themselves and how they see the world. What feeds that narrative is the people you spend time with. Language dictates attitude which dictates opportunity which dictates results. Spending time with visionary people feeds our narratives. Rock himself tries to spend as much time as he can, consciously with people that are ahead of him. When he is mentoring, he is also feeding the narratives of other people.
Our brains are like computers and if you feed your brain with the right program then you can do anything that your soul craves. Growing up, Rock's programming was to always work harder but later on he met a mentor who introduced him to a different program that transformed him. Surrounding yourself with people who believe that you can do what is in your heart is the key to success.
3. Find Mentors
People are missing out in life because they are waiting for life to get easier. Find mentors and try to solve problems for them. Rock's first mentor ushered him into owning a restaurant because while working at the restaurant he always took the shifts that people did not want. He solved the problem for him and the mentor rewarded him by making him partner. Rock advises people to go find successful people, find their problems and try and solve them. In this way, learning from the mentors will be guaranteed.
4. Work Smarter Not Harder
Working smarter sounds cliché but everyone should know what their style is and perfect that style. Rock uses what he calls the Sunday system for success. He uses it to plan for his week. Rock reverse engineers his week by filling in important things from Sunday backwards. In this way he can then resource the logistics. He either delegates the duty or he does it himself. Grouping activities in chunks saves Rock a lot of time and this has improved his efficiency.
One important thing that Rock has learned is that people often compare themselves to others and this deters them from their goals. However, people need to only use comparison for learning. Look into your values and live up to them. In this way, you can feel fulfilled.
Be relentlessly committed to what you want to succeed in, whether it is love like Rock or anything you want in life. Be creative in finding ways to succeed at what you choose. Constantly be innovative and always strive to grow as a person. This all means that you have to be willing to go somewhere that you did not go before even if it hurts or when you think you should not work it out harder. A lot of energy is required to transform as a person or even succeed in life and the great thing is if you put out a lot then you get multiple rewards. People need to be committed to ensure they are the best versions of themselves.
6. Have the Right Intention
Rock has learnt that having the right intention in life is the difference between successful people and mediocre people. Rock's intention is add value to whatever he does. A professional's intention is to serve and make a difference while a con man's intention is to take advantage of people and get what he needs. Therefore, set your intentions and let it go.
7. Morning Routines
The first thing Rock does in the morning is exercise. He believes that the first hour of every day should be for creating energy, whether mental energy or physical energy. Rock does sit ups and yoga. Sometimes he even lifts patio furniture as part of his cardio if there are no gyms wherever he is.
The second thing Rock does is he has outward conversations or incantations or declarations. Rock always tells himself that he is gifted, guided, grateful, powerful, passionate, playful, sexy, sensual, sensitive and blessed. After this, Rock mediates, journals, reads and tries healthy things like water with lemon.
When it comes to fulfillment, harmony is a word that comes to Rock's mind. When he is in harmony, he feels happiest. Harmony is when he goes and works out with his girl and they walk out of the gym together feeling blissful. They are patient with each other when they are working out and if one finishes earlier than the other, the other person will wait patiently without complaining or grumbling. So fulfillment is really being in alignment and being respectful of what's important to the other person and being adaptable.
The other piece of fulfillment for Rock is working so diligently hard to create an epic life for himself. He ends up learning so much that he feels destined to share it with other people. Fulfillment is being so committed, so much to the depth of his own growth that he is so alive to share it with others and it makes him feel certain that he must communicate this to people.
